A Study of the Relationship Between Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and Psychological Conflict seen Through Sunflower Paintings
Park Wan-Yong

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship and psychological conflict between Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin through sunflower paintings. Van Gogh and Gauguin's first meeting began with a sunflower painting of Van Gogh's Paris period, and their studio sharing together was decorated with Van Gogh's sunflower paintings of Arles period. Conflicts between them and ear incident triggered by Gauguin's ¡®Van Gogh Painting Sunflowers¡¯, and the broken relationship was restored when Gauguin ordered Van Gogh to paint sunflowers. The sunflower paintings created by these relationships and conflicts were compared in terms of production attitude, meanings of symbolic expression, and production technique. While Van Gogh's production attitude expressed the inner world through the observation of objects, Gauguin tried to express the fantasy world through memory and imagination. In the symbolic expressions, while Van Gogh symbolized the sunflower as the meaning of the sun, Christ, and love, Gauguin used sunflowers as an attempt to unify a dramatic contrast like Van Gogh and himself, civilization and primitiveness, and the sacred and profane. In the production technique, while Van Gogh expresses the contrast between blue and yellow with the intense impasto technique by short brush strokes, Gauguin uses a style of Synthetism and planned technique of flattening as thin as possible the primary colors representing pristine nature with drawing line. Although these differences were psychological conflicts in their communal life, in the end, they were their characteristics and the source of their creativity.
